Our Programs

We promote universal access to general health, sexual and reproductive health and rights through research, advocacy, and innovative partnerships.

Overview of Our Programs

  • School outreaches

Our school outreaches focus on empowering youth and young adults in secondary schools with knowledge and skills about mental health. A team of mental health champions is assigned a school where he/she mentors students in issues of mental health knowledge and well-being. This is to ensure that students develop in an informed environment about their mental health well-being, be in a position to support those in need of mental health support but also to be mental health champions in their immediate communities.

Some of the activities done in school include starting up mental health clubs in schools, conducting drama skits with themes of mental health hence creating awareness, designing a speaking compound on issues related to mental health, and setting up of counselling/listening corner for students.

My Mind, My Actions talk show

The talk show targets people from the cooperate sector such as the youth and the mature adults. The show looks at purely mental health-related matters.

It sensitizes and educates people on the causes of mental illnesses and provides a platform for those who have overcome mental health challenges to share their stories with the audience hence giving support and knowledge.

The show also brings on mental health professionals who share with the audience their expertise and guidance to the viewers. It’s hosted once a month, every last Tuesday of the month on the YouTube channel of PYFU from 7 pm to 9 pm EAT.

    Hospital workouts

To support the recovery of mental illness patients, we started a program of workouts at the mental wards of hospitals, Masaka Regional Referral Hospital being the first hospital where we are implementing this program.

During this activity, mental health champions assigned to hospitals take patients through physical exercises/ drills twice a month. This is to enable patient fitness but also body activeness. The drills take about two hours at the ward premises and after a drill session, a trained mental health champion talks to patients with a message of hope.

    Champions academy

The academy targets people in the fields of social science and psychology or any other related field. The major aim is to train and empower the students with knowledge and skills in mental health well-being, sexual and reproductive health, and leadership.

The academy is set to train candidates for a period of one year whereby the first six months are for intense training from experts and the other six months are for volunteer placement by the organization. The volunteer placement is to help the candidate to practice what he/she has been trained about and it contributes to the finalization of the course.

At the end of the course, we aim to produce a champion who is knowledgeable and skilled in matters of mental health well-being, sexual and reproductive health, and a good leader who can be able to support people in different communities.

What We Do

We create and build communities of mental health champions by empowering individuals in their immediate communities to fight mental illness stigma.

We create an environment where people live free from mental health stigma and can freely seek health services.
