Safe corner

To provide accessible and student-friendly mental health support within schools, Psychiki Ygeia Foundation Uganda (PYFU) has established designated meeting spaces known as Safe Corners. These are quiet, private rooms within partner schools where students can receive individual counseling and psychosocial support in a secure, non-judgmental environment.
The Safe Corner is managed by a trained mental health professional or counselor from PYFU, rather than school staff. This model was intentionally designed based on feedback from students, who expressed that they would feel more comfortable confiding in external professionals than in their teachers. This approach helps foster trust and openness, reducing the fear of stigma and ensuring confidentiality.

Each Safe Corner is overseen by a PYFU Mental Health Champion, a professional trained in adolescent mental health and school-based interventions. This champion visits the school twice a month during the school term, engaging with students individually or in small groups, offering basic counseling, and providing emotional support.
