As part of our holistic approach to mental health care, Psychiki Ygeia Foundation Uganda (PYFU) introduced a Workout Program designed to support the recovery and rehabilitation of individuals living with mental illness. This initiative is currently being implemented at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital, our pioneer site, with plans for expansion to other mental health facilities across the country. The program integrates guided physical exercises into the care provided within mental health wards, recognizing that physical activity plays a crucial role in improving mood, reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety, and enhancing overall well-being. Research has shown that regular physical movement can significantly support mental health recovery—especially for patients in long-term care. Every month, trained Mental Health Champions from PYFU are assigned to the hospital and conduct bi- monthly fitness sessions with patients. These sessions last approximately two hours and are carried out within the ward premises, ensuring accessibility and comfort for the patients. The activities include light exercises, stretching routines, group drills, and movement-based games—tailored to accommodate different physical abilities.

Following each workout session, a motivational talk is delivered by the mental health champion, focused on building self-worth, sharing messages of hope, and encouraging resilience among patients. These sessions are intended not only to uplift patients but also to promote social connection, restore a sense
of routine, and support the healing process.
The program is rooted in the belief that recovery from mental illness is not just medical—it is also
emotional, social, and physical. By combining physical activity with psychoeducation and peer support, we aim to improve patients’ quality of life and contribute to a more compassionate and comprehensive model of mental health care.
